 Tech Talks

During last year in 2024 the IT department would host a Tech Talk discussion a certain feature or software for that month. Tech Talks helps student and faculty to understand what YSU offers through their digital services to stay digitally organized and up to date on events.

Getting Digitally Organized

As part of your student experience at YSU, you have access to Microsoft 365 & Blackboard. In Microsoft 365, your account includes a calendar that is accessible through Microsoft Outlook. In Blackboard, you also have a student calendar. During this Tech Talk we discuss how to utilize both calendars and bring them together in one place. This is a great way to keep up with due dates, deadlines, appointments, and more!

OneDrive is part of the Microsoft 365 platform. Students have up to 1TB of cloud storage in their OneDrive. You can use OneDrive to organize your files, collaborate with your peers, showcase your work, build a digital portfolio, and more. OneDrive also enables you to create and edit documents, presentations, spreadsheets, and more directly from OneDrive!

Outlook, OneDrive, and Blackboard are all accessible on mobile devices,  Just search your app market for each product. You can access your calendars, content, and collaborate with your peers. The video link discusses these resources in more detail.

Protecting Your Digital World

As technology continues to evolve, so do the intentions of bad actors looking to steal your information. Fortunately, there are tips and resources available to avoid becoming a victim.

The first step to securing your accounts is by creating strong passwords. For example, be sure to avoid using personal identifiable information such as addresses, birthdays, and anniversaries in your passwords.  Tip: Formulate a password using a line from your favorite song such as the chorus or a verse. Take the first letter of every word to formulate a password. You can use a mix of upper and lowercase letters along with numbers and special characters (such as !@#$) to formulate passwords. It is recommended to not use the same password more than once.

Never share your passwords with anyone! YSU, your bank, nor any reputable organization will ever ask you for your passwords.

Additional Security Considerations:

  • Be careful of apps that you install on your devices. Always read the terms and conditions before installing. Your device will also notify you of the information collected by the app such as your browsing habits, locations, and more. This information may be stored by the app and shared with third parties for sales and even malicious purposes.
  • When using a shared device, always be sure to log out when you are done. This is especially important in any shared location such as a computer lab.
  • Phishing email scams are always out to seek information. The  Survival Guide is available to help you identify scams. Even if an email looks legitimate, be careful if it is asking for information.  When it comes to gift cards and rewards,  if it sounds to good to be true, it probably is. The information gathered can help a bad actor steal your information! Never give passwords or personal information.  If you are not sure, it is safest to ignore and delete the email. You can always contact the IT Service Desk at 330-941-1595 for guidance.
