Question
What technical actions can I take to make sure I have a positive Blackboard experience?
Answer
There are many considerations for Blackboard experience optimization during your student career. The following recommendations will provide you with resources to help make your Blackboard experience a positive one. It is recommended that students revisit these items before the start of each semester.
Computers
Mobile Devices
Internet Connection
System Updates
Web Browsers
Adequate computer hardware is strongly recommended for a positive Blackboard experience. Your computer system needs to not only be compatible with Blackboard but also have enough resources to keep up with operating system updates and other demands. Please check YSU's Recommended System Configurations for the latest information on recommended computer hardware.
The convenience of accessing Blackboard from your phone or tablet is unmatched. Using the iOS AppStore or the Google Play Store, you can obtain the latest version of the Blackboard mobile app. You can keep up with notifications and perform a variety of course functions including accessing your courses, checking your grades, participating in a discussion, and viewing relevant course details. You should still use a computer to submit assignments or take exams.
In today's always connected world, a stable Internet connection is an important component of a positive experience. Cable or Fiber connection is a good starting point if you are studying from home. If you are working from home, plug into your modem or router with an Ethernet cord, especially when taking an exam. If this is not possible, sit as close as possible to your wireless router so that you have the strongest possible signal. If you are on campus, be sure to connect to the YSU wireless network and if you are staying in a dorm, consider plugging into the Ethernet port in your room. Check out fast.com to check your Internet connection speed and ping (lag time).
As time goes on, system updates will be required. System updates are important in keeping your computer secure and addressing any bugs or performance issues. It is important not to ignore these updates. If you find that these updates are slowing your computer down, it is time to clean up your computer or consider upgrading to a newer system.
For the best experience, we recommend the use of the latest versions of Google Chrome, Mozilla FireFox, or Safari (Mac OS or iOS only) for computers and mobile devices.
