How do I access my YSU Office 365 email from an Android device?

Answer

This guide will assist you with configuring your Android device to access the MyYSU email system. This guide will display two common versions of Android, but some images and wording may look different than what you see depending on your device's make and model. 

  • Note: The main document utilizes Exchange ActiveSync connectivity for mail, contacts, calendar, and notes synchronization. However, Exchange also requires accepting a variety of device management features and policies on mobile devices. 

Required Items:

  • Android device with Android 2.2 “Froyo” or later
    • Devices released after May 2010 should have Android 2.2 or later, but you can check in Menu > Settings > About phone > Software information for the version on your device if you are unsure.

Configure your Android device to access the YSU E-mail:

Adding your YSU email to your Android device:

  1. Click the Home button  on your Android device to access your Home screen. 

  2. Open the App drawer and tap on the Settings  application.


     
  3. Select Accounts & Sync or Accounts from the Settings menu.
    • Note: Depending on which version of Android you are using, and which specific model of phone you have, you may see different wording to describe options. We display two images for each setting to better assist you. Please follow the images that best match your device. 


       
  4. Select  Add or Add Account.


     
  5. Select Exchange ActiveSync, Microsoft Exchange, or Exchange from the list of options. 


     
  6. Type in your full email address and password, and then click Next. You may be prompted to enter your email, click next, and then enter your password.
    • If you are a student, your full email address is username@student.ysu.edu (i.e. ptpenguin@student.ysu.edu).
    • If you are faculty/staff, your full email address will be username@ysu.edu (i.e. ptpenguin@ysu.edu).


       
  7. You may receive a  Redirect Request prompt. Select OK


     
  8. Setup incoming server settings.
    You will need to manually edit the Server: setting. A red exclamation point has been added next to that field below. 

    Enter the following additional information about your Office 365 account:

    Username: Your full YSU email address (ending in @student.ysu.edu for students or @ysu.edu for faculty/staff)
    Password: Your YSU password
     Server: outlook.office365.com
    Port: 443 Security type: SSL/TLS (or SSL)

    Note: On some versions of Android, you may see a This server requires an encrypted SSL connection checkbox. If it appears, check the box or leave the box checked.Tap Next to continue



     
  9.  Remote Security Administration prompt. 
    • Most versions of Android will ask you if you would like to allow remote device management features and policies by the Exchange server. This is simply a standard feature of Exchange ActiveSync and will not be used unless triggered by your own actions in the Office 365 web interface. 
    • You may also need to set up a lock screen/device passcode or swipe pattern.
    • Select OK to continue.

       
  10. Give your account a name and tap Next.
  11. You are now ready to begin receiving the YSU email on your Android device.
