What are my password self-service options?
Answer
You can use the YSU password self-service options at Password Self Service to complete the following actions:
Change Your Current Penguin Portal Account Password
Follow the steps below to change Penguin Portal account password. You should refer to the How Do I Reset an Expired or Forgotten Penguin Portal Account Password section if you forgot your current password or if your password has already expired.
- Navigate to the YSU Password Self-Service Options site.
- Select Change Your Current Password within the list.
- Enter your YSU Login ID into the User Name box.
Note: This is the first portion of your YSU email address before the @ symbol (e.g. username@student.ysu.edu or username@ysu.edu).
- Enter your current password into the Password box.
- Click Sign in.
- Enter your desired password into the New Password and Confirm Password fields then click Change Password.
Note: Be sure to follow all password requirements at the top of the page or the new password will not be accepted.
- Wait for the password change to complete and click Continue.
- Close your browser tab or window upon receiving the You are now logged out message.
- Your password has been changed successfully and you should now be able to sign into your account.
Follow the steps below to activate a Penguin Portal account:
- Navigate to the Password Self-Service Options site.
- Select Activate New Account within the list.
- Enter the information as requested:
- Login ID: This is the beginning of your YSU email address before the @ symbol (e.g. username@student.ysu.edu or username@ysu.edu).
- Banner Y ID: Your unique YSU Banner ID number (e.g. Y00123456). This will be provided to you as part of your acceptance information and is also printed on the front of your YSU ID card.
- Last 4 digits of SSN: The last 4 digits of your Social Security Number (SSN).
Note: Last 4 digits of SSN (If you are an international student, please type in the last 4 digits of your Banner “Y” ID. For all other students, if you did not submit a SSN on your application, please contact the Service Desk at 330-941-1595 to activate your account.)
- Date of Birth (YYYYMMDD): Your date of birth in the format YYYYMMDD (i.e. 19550224 for February 24, 1955)
- Check the I'm not a robot checkbox.
- You may be prompted to complete a CAPTCHA. If so, please follow the instructions presented on the screen to continue.
- Click Activate.
- Click Continue if the activation was successful.
Note: If unsuccessful, verify that all information was entered correctly and in the correct format, or refer to the bottom of this page for additional assistance.
- Enter your desired password into the New Password and Confirm Password fields and click Change Password.
Note: Be sure to follow all password requirements at the top of the page or the new password will not be accepted.
- Wait for the password change to complete and click Continue.
- Select three different security questions from the drop-down menus, enter valid responses for each of the questions, and click Save Responses.
Note: The system will not allow you to use the same answer for multiple questions.
- Click Continue when the system notifies you that your questions were successfully saved.
- Close your browser tab or window upon receiving the You are now logged out message
- Your account is now activated and ready to be used.
NOTE: When the error below occurs, contact the help desk to get a new temporary password. After which, use the 'Change Temporary/Expired Password' option to choose a permanent password.
"Your User Account is not Eligible for Activation"
Reset Forgotten Password
Follow the instructions below to reset an expired or forgotten Penguin Portal account password.
- Navigate to the Password Self-Service Options site.
- Select Reset Forgotten Password within the list.
- Enter your Penguin Portal username.
Note: This is the first portion of your YSU assigned email address before the @ symbol (e.g. username@student.ysu.edu or username@ysu.edu).
- Click the I'm not a robot checkbox.
- You may be prompted to complete a Captcha. If so, please follow the instructions presented on the screen to continue.
- Click Search.
- Enter valid responses for each of the 3 security questions.
Note: Responses are CASE SENSITIVE!
- Click Check Answers.
- Enter your desired password into the New Password and Confirm Password fields and click Change Password.
Note: Be sure to follow all password requirements at the top of the page or the new password will not be accepted
- Wait for the password change to complete and click Continue.
- Close your browser tab or window upon receiving the You are now logged out message.
- Your password has been changed successfully.

Update Challenge Question Responses
Follow the steps below to view your account history to update your challenge questions and answers so you can change a forgotten password at your convenience or in the event the Service Desk is unavailable.
- Navigate to the Password Self-Service Options site.
- Select update Challenge Question Responses within the list.
- Enter your Penguin Portal username.
Note: This is the first portion of your YSU assigned email address before the @ symbol (e.g. username@student.ysu.edu or username@ysu.edu).
- Click the I'm not a robot checkbox.
- You may be prompted to complete a Captcha. If so, please follow the instructions presented on the screen to continue.
- Click Clear Answers.
- Click OK.
- Enter your new responses.
- Click Continue at the bottom to close the window and return to the main menu.
Password Change Account Information
Follow the steps below to view your account history:
- Navigate to the Password Self-Service Options site.
- Select Password Change Account Information within the list.
- Enter your Penguin Portal username.
Note: This is the first portion of your YSU assigned email address before the @ symbol (e.g. username@student.ysu.edu or username@ysu.edu).
- Enter your current password into the Password box.
- Click Sign in.
- Select which information you want to view by clicking on the tabs at the top, My Account, Password Policy, or Password History.
- Click Continue at the bottom to close the window and return to the main menu.
