Question
How do I get a video transcript in Microsoft Stream?
Answer
You can generate transcripts for any videos hosted in your Microsoft Stream account, which is part of your OneDrive. This is especially helpful for ADA compliance. The transcript will display to your audience on the side of your video and as captions if they enable captions on the Stream Player. As a UDL +1, you can also use the transcript to create text based material such as user guides, companion documents, documents for screen readers, and much more.
To create and obtain a video transcript, please take the following steps:
1. Login to Stream at stream.microsoft.com.
2. Once you are logged into Stream, you can browse your library for the video in which you wish to obtain a transcript.
3. Once you are at the video page, you can generate a transcript. Click Video Settings on the right side menu, then click the drop down arrow next to Transcript and captions. After collapsing the menu, click the Generate button.
4. Next, specify the spoken language in which to create the transcript. The default is English (United States), but you can click the drop down to specify another language. Click Generate.
Note: It will take several minutes to generate the transcript. Please allow up to 15 minutes for the process to complete.
After clicking generate, you can now see the progress of the transcript. No further action is required on your part. You can leave this window open or come back to the video later for the transcript.
5. Once the transcript has been created, you (and your audience) will now be able to access the transcript by clicking the Transcript button on the right side menu. Your audience can also toggle captions on or off by clicking the CC button on the video player.
Form this screen, you can view, edit, or download the transcript. Click the Edit button to make any adjustments to the transcript. Click the Download button to download the transcript as a Word Document or a vtt file (You will most likely use Word).
Form here, you can format the document as desired to create companion guides, user guides, and
other alternative format documents.
